Not even a month ago, Bonny Doon rocked our SXSW outdoor stage at High Noon in Austin. With an anticipated album on the way, they fleshed out some new tracks while giving some love to some old favorites. As Bonny Doon, Bobby Colombo, Bill Lennox and Jake Kmeicik have been making music together for nearly a decade. But, after serving as Waxahatchee’s backing band on her phenomenal LP Saint Cloud, the band caught a gust of attention. However, that belovedness didn’t come without hitches in the road. While touring with Waxahatchee, Kmeicik found himself grappling with Crohn’s disease while Colombo was dealing with the repercussions of a brain injury and Lyme disease.
In the process, the trio found themselves in a stirring fit of immense joy. Their new, forthcoming record Let There Be Music is an expression of gratitude for being alive and being together. The title track keeps the celebration chugging along. “Let There Be Music” is a piano-driven achievement in jangle-pop, one that’s got a roaring sing-along sheen glazed atop an ethos of three guys at the height of their chemistry together. Even the lyrics sheet is in all caps, a fitting emphasis on their newfound approach to giving space to the heights of good times, good people and good tunes.
