Listen to Carly Rae Jepsen’s Valentine’s-Ready New Track “Let’s Be Friends”

The queen of pop songs about intricate relationships, Carly Rae Jepsen, chose to share an aptly Valentine’s Day-ready track Friday titled “Let’s Be Friends.” The song sees Jepsen lean further into the rhythmic, The Police-inspired sound she explored on her 2019 standout album Dedicated (you can hear it on tracks like “I’ll Be Your Girl”).

“Let’s Be Friends” could be a slightly more elegant No Doubt track, with lyrics among Jepsen’s pettiest. In a spoken-word bridge, Jepsen says, “I had a really nice time with you. I mean, you’re sort of a dick sometimes. But someone out there is surely gonna love a dick. Uh, check please!” It is entirely, wholly, utterly shocking to hear Carly Rae Jepsen call someone anything saucier than a jerk, and it totally works for the song, which is all about realizing you actually dislike the person you’re dating.

The accompanying lyric video sees a paper doll version of Jepsen go on several disastrous Valentine’s dates, one of which takes place in a man’s living room that is covered in framed photos of women’s feet. By the end, it seems like Jepsen has embraced not only her own malice, but also chaos itself, reveling in her date falling through a manhole and spray painting over Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss” in a museum. As lovelorn as Jepsen can be, sometimes she’s fed up with romance, especially as V-Day looms closer and closer.

We named Dedicated the best pop album of 2019. Check out the full list here. You can also watch the adorable video for “Let’s Be Friends” below.
