Exclusive: Watch Caroline Spence’s Acoustic Performance of “Who’s Gonna Make My Mistakes”

Earlier this month, Nashville-based singer/songwriter Caroline Spence released her third full-length LP and Rounder Records debut, the delightful Mint Condition. It’s received all kinds of praise in roots circles, including a spot on our list of the best country and Americana albums of the year so far.

Today (Tuesday, May 28), Spence is sharing a live acoustic performance of album track “Who’s Gonna Make My Mistakes,” premiering here at Paste. In the clip, Spence is joined by Dan Knobler on electric guitar, which is the driving instrument in the drifting roots rocker. This version slows the song’s tempo to a gentle sway, and it’s quite lovely to behold.

The track finds Spence at a low point, “Walking through the bar with a glass half-empty / Wonderin’ what I’m gonna do to fill it up,” before she promptly bucks up and owns her mess. “Who’s gonna make my mistakes if I don’t?” she sings. “Who’s gonna take me, take me back home?” It’s a bold declaration of autonomy.
