Charlotte Gainsbourg Releases Dreamy Video For New Single “Deadly Valentine,” Feat. Dev Hynes

Earlier this month, Charlotte Gainsbourg announced her first album in seven years, Rest, and debuted the poignant title track. Today, she upped the tempo with the release of the follow-up single “Deadly Valentine,” a danceable song driven by an electro-pop beat overlaid with Gainsbourg’s dreamy voice.

Accompanying the single is a video Gainsbourg starred in and directed herself, featuring charmingly eccentric dance choreography and Dev Hynes, aka Blood Orange. From start to finish, the clip chronicles a lifetime romance between two lovers, from when they are children who live next door to each other to when they are an elderly married couple, seemingly so in love that they’re still clad in their wedding attire.

Gainsbourg says of the video:

“Each video came from personal, resonating ideas. This song mixes wedding vows with an offbeat tone. I wanted to express the idea of a lifetime engagement; a couple running to church, from childhood to old age, a lifetime path. I asked my friend Dev Hynes if he would play my partner, and he very graciously agreed. It was fun finding our younger and older selves! For my part, I had all I needed at home (with their consent of course!). I nearly asked my mother, but in the end, didn’t dare … ”

Rest will be out Nov. 17 via Because Music/Atlantic Records. Other tracks on the record will feature collaborations with Paul McCartney, Connan Mockasin and Owen Pallett. Watch the enchanting video for “Deadly Valentine” below, and find out more about Gainsbourg’s forthcoming album here.
