Scottish synth-pop trio Chvrches performed a cover of Beyonce’s “XO” as part of a live session on the Honda Stage for their official Vevo page.
“XO” is taken from Beyonce’s 2013 self-titled album. Chvrches’ Martin Doherty says of their Beyonce cover:
We have been talking about covering ‘XO’ by Beyonce for years. It’s one of those moments where you don’t forget the first time you hear a song and it speaks to you on that level. “XO” was a moment like that for all of us. We were on tour, all of us losing our minds about this Beyonce tune that had just come into the world and we tried it a few times. We tried it with big production and it all seemed somehow wrong or somehow inferior. She’s obviously an untouchable vocalist.
Chvrches lead vocalist Lauren Mayberry continued, “Before people watch, I am aware I don’t sound like Beyonce. I can’t sing like Beyonce, but it was more a homage to Beyonce. This one at least seems like we could turn it into an indie, alternative jam and it would still be OK.”
In addition to their Beyonce cover, they performed stripped down versions of “The Mother We Share,” taken from their 2013 album The Bones of What You Believe and “Get Out,” which features on their forthcoming album Love Is Dead, out May 25 via Glassnote Records.
Love Is Dead will be the band’s third studio album and their first since 2015’s Every Open Eye. Their new album was produced by Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia) and will include their previously released new singles “Get Out” and “My Enemy,” which featured The National’s Matt Berninger (who also appeared in the band’s “Get Out” visual).
Additionally, the footage features exclusive interviews about the creative process behind the band’s new album, pushing their boundaries and what “authentic music” means to them.
