Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman and solo artist John Fogerty turns 74 today. The main singer/songwriter and lead guitarist of CCR helped shape the band into one of America’s seminal swampy blues rock groups. CCR ran against the grain when it came to San Francisco bands in the late 1960s; while their peers were making psychedelic or jangly rock ‘n’ roll, CCR opted for a rootsy, Southern-indebted sound.
1969 was a big year for Creedence Clearwater Revival. They released three full-length albums—Bayou Country, Green River and Willy and the Poor Boys—and performed at the famous Woodstock Festival. On March 14, 1969, the band played a hometown show at the Fillmore East, which included a nine-minute instrumental jam “Stormy Monday” and covers of Wilson Pickett’s “Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won’t Do)” and Dale Hawkins’ “Suzie Q.” Fifty years later, this 35-minute set marked by extended jams and Fogerty’s sage, bluesy snarl still packs a punch.
