Daughter have released their cut from Frightened Rabbit’s forthcoming 10th anniversary covers record Tiny Changes, a dark, resounding take on the band’s devastating “Poke.”
In light of the album’s announcement last month, Daughter took to Twitter to speak about their reimagining of the track, writing: “It was an honour to be given the opportunity to cover such a personal, devastating song. Although we felt we could never really do it justice, we enjoyed every moment of the challenge.”
Daughter strips “Poke” of its tender, hurried acoustic strumming and reconstructs it with layers of synth, echoing electric guitars and keyboards. Whereas Frightened Rabbit’s version is a warm landscape of swelling acoustics, Daughter’s take is reverberating, heavy and electronic-driven.
Tiny Changes celebrates the 10th anniversary of Frightened Rabbit’s seminal sophomore album The Midnight Organ Fight, and features reimagined versions of the album’s tracks by Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, Julien Baker, Manchester Orchestra, and Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES, among others.
The covers album is being released in memoriam of the band’s late frontman Scott Hutchison, who passed away in 2018 after the band wrapped their 10-year anniversary tour for Organ Fight. Prior to his death, the band was already in the process of approving the tracklist and artwork.
“Poke” follows previously released covers of “The Modern Leper” by Biffy Clyro and Julien Baker, and “My Backwards Walk” by Manchester Orchestra, and Katie Harkin & Sarah Silverman. You can revisit the former covers here and the latter here.
