First Trailer for Mysterious Donald Glover, Rihanna Film Project Unveiled

Attendees of Donald Glover’s PHAROS Festival this past weekend were treated to a sneak peek of his and Rihanna’s mysterious new film project, catching the first trailer to the film.

The project is reportedly titled Guava Island, though the clip posted to Twitter doesn’t confirm this, and is directed by longtime Childish Gambino collaborator Hiro Murai. Murai has worked with Glover on Atlanta, as well as on the “This Is America” and “Sober” music videos.

While a photo of Glover and Rihanna has been circulating since as far back as August, much of the project has been unknown until now, as neither artist has posted any information on social media channels or commented on speculation.

The PHAROS-premiered trailer opens with Glover, apparently playing an aspiring musician, singing and playing guitar, then joking with girlfriend Rihanna before the trailer takes a turn for the chaotic.

“We live in paradise but none of us have the time or the means to actually live here,” says Glover’s character before a montage of images flashes by: Glover performing, running around the city and eventually, appearing to be held hostage. All of this is framed by the tropical climate in which they filmed, reportedly in Cuba.

The credits following the trailer label the project “A Childish Gambino film” while also revealing a few other familiar faces who will share the screen with Glover and Rihanna, namely Black Panther’s Leticia Wright and Game of Thrones’ Nonso Anozie.

Check out tweeted footage of the trailer below, along with a 2011 Childish Gambino performance from the Paste archives, and revisit our 2011 feature on the artist here.
