Frank Ocean Producer Malay Talks Boys Don’t Cry Delay in Reddit AMA

Music News Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean’s producer James Ryan Ho, better known as Malay, held a Reddit AMA Monday night, warning fans beforehand that he would not be answering any questions regarding Ocean’s elusive second album Boys Don’t Cry. However, much like previously set release dates for the album, Malay broke this promise and responded to a few frustrated inquiries.

“First of all we all massively appreciate and love you guys, Frank has told me this himself many times. To be fair tho, art cannot be rushed,” Malay said.

Ocean announced in April of 2015 that the highly anticipated Channel Orange follow-up would drop in July of that year. However, the deadline came and went without a release or any communication from Ocean. Rumors have continued to circle, the latest being an Aug. 5 release date, but none have come to fruition.

When asked whether the LP was ever likely to be released on Aug. 5, Malay replied with: “Never heard of an actual date… Then again I don’t pay attention to a lot of stuff.”

He continued to provide little explanation for the delay, but implied that the album is still undergoing edits, writing: “It’s about making sure the perfect aesthetic for the situation has been reached, to do that, takes constant tweaking, trial and error.. That goes for any creative situation.”

While fans continue to impatiently wait for Ocean’s follow-up, NME reports that Channel Orange has seen a 40 percent spike in sales and has re-entered the U.S. charts for the first time since May of 2013.
