Great Grandpa to Release Their First New Album Since 2019

At the end of 2019, Seattle band Great Grandpa released the incredible Four of Arrows, which was one of my very favorite records of that year. Their show at Mahall’s in Lakewood, Ohio opening for Rozwell Kid and Vundabar feels like it happened a lifetime ago, but Great Grandpa’s 2025 return turns a “lifetime ago” into “like yesterday.” Patience, Moonbeam, their first release with Run For Cover Records, is arriving on March 28 and ending the band’s “intentional hiatus” once and for all.

Lead single “Junior,” which follows the previously released 2024 songs “Doom” and “Kid,” is “told through the eyes of a character who tromps around in a state of reckless boyhood and brags of pulling off ‘light crimes with my buddies all night’ against a backdrop of rollicking banjo and strings.” On “Junior,” Al Menne, Dylan Hanwright, Cam LaFlam, and Pat and Carrie Goodwin sound not just like their old selves, but like a reconnected family with years of new perspectives to document together. It’s a deeply colorful and stirring work of twangy retrospect.

In 2023, Menne put out his debut solo album Freak Accident, and in our conversation he revealed that Great Grandpa, despite members now living in Seattle, Los Angeles and Denmark, had begun writing music together again. “We’re all like individual swinging pendulums,” Hanwright said in a statement, “and every now and then we come into sync for a few rotations. Sometimes it’s two of us, sometimes three of us, often it’s not any of us. But when it does come together, it’s really beautiful.”
