Watch John Hiatt Play Three Songs From His New Album The Eclipse Sessions in the Paste Studio

John Hiatt has been making music since 1974, when his first album, Hangin’ Around The Observatory, made its debut. He’s released multiple albums every decade since, with records dropping at an almost-yearly rate in the 2000s and early 2010s. Then, after 2014’s Terms of My Surrender, he took what constitutes a break in his book, a four-year hiatus. Now, he’s back with his first album since then, The Eclipse Sessions, out tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 12. Though he’s been writing songs for the better part of 40 years, the country singer certainly has not run out of things to say. “He nestles into a rich folk-rock vein on these 11 songs, blending acoustic and electric guitars with the thrum of an organ and the ever-steady hand of drummer Kenneth Blevins, who has played with Hiatt on and off since Slow Turning in 1987,” our critic writes of The Eclipse Sessions.

Hiatt’s 23rd studio album was recorded in just three days in Nashville last year during the Aug. 21 solar eclipse: hence, The Eclipse Sessions. He stopped by the Paste studios in New York City on Wednesday (Oct. 10) to play three of those dark-sun-inspired tunes: “Aces Up Your Sleeve,” “Cry to Me” and “All the Way to the River.” You can watch the entire session below.
