Kate Davis has shared her latest blissful single, “Trophy,” ahead of her debut album of the same name, along with an endearing, yet unsettling music video.
The indie multi-instrumentalist’s newest release gracefully floats through a shimmering synth line as Davis sings of desire and longing, likening it to how “Man loves / a trophy.”
In the video for “Trophy,” directed by Holden Brown, Davis takes the stage of a Lynchian talent show in a number of roles—from a magician to a pie-eating child—to win over the show’s stone-faced judges.
As the song’s key shifts, the dreamy tone of the video does as well, with each of the night’s acts barreling toward a disastrous, bloody finale. It’s soon discovered that Davis’ unassuming self has been sabotaging her other iterations—killing them off until she emerges as the show’s winner. When all is said and done, she wipes a drop of blood off her grinning face while the judges give a standing ovation.
Davis’ debut album Trophy will continue to follow the themes of identity and self-reflection that her singles have laid out so far. The record is set for release Nov. 8 on Solitare Recordings.
