“Uneasy listening” trio Loma are currently at work on the follow-up to their self-titled 2018 debut, and they’ve now shared their new album’s first single, the hushed and hypnotic “Half Silences,” with a gorgeous video to match.
Loma are made up of Shearwater frontman Jonathan Meiburg, and Cross Record bandmates Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski. The Dripping Springs, Texas-based trio released their self-titled debut last February on Sub Pop, earning the acclaim of critics and peers—Brian Eno (!) among them—alike.
Meiburg, Cross and Duszynski star in the “Half Silences” video, which they also co-directed alongside Sam Sanford. Both song and visual alike rely heavily on negative space, riding the line between sound and silence, light and shadow, motion and stillness. The result is unnerving, but not self-serious, like an unusually genial cult ritual. “I couldn’t find my way out of this feeling,” Cross sings, as we listen and wonder why she would want to.
Meiburg said of the band’s new single and video:
We’re deep inside the new album, but didn’t want to wait to release this song. That’s not CGI, by the way; Dan and I held the fireworks while Emily danced and our friend Sam yelled, “Lower! Higher! To the left!” Watch for a cameo by Noodle the cat.
