Mac DeMarco’s Heartfelt New Single Waves Goodbye to “All Of Our Yesterdays”

The latest single from Mac DeMarco’s accidental Mitski tribute (read: similarly named new album) Here Comes The Cowboy is “All Of Our Yesterdays,” an easygoing contemplation of time’s inexorable passage, which you can hear down below. It’s the second single from Here Comes The Cowboy, due May 10 via DeMarco’s own Mac’s Record Label, following his other unwitting Mitski nod, lead single “Nobody.”

DeMarco shared the following characteristically casual note recalling how his heartfelt new song came to be:

Hi everybody, Mac here.
Here’s my new song, it’s called “All Of Our Yesterdays.” This was the first song I wrote in the sequence of songs that appear on my new record. Most of the rest of the songs were written in November right before we went on tour in Europe, but this one’s probably from about seven or eight months before that. I left it sitting with only one verse done for a long time, then finished it up while I was writing the rest of the record. The phrase “all of our yesterdays” comes from the play Macbeth. Also I think there’s a Star Trek episode from 1969 with the same title; very cool. I had just seen a documentary about Oasis before writing this song, and I was trying to write a gigantic rock and roll hit with my renewed love for the band. I didn’t really get close to that at all, but I’m happy with the song that came out hahahahaha.
I hope you enjoy, have a nice day.
See ya later.

Here Comes The Cowboy follows 2017’s acclaimed This Old Dog, which found DeMarco deemphasizing electric guitars, and bringing synthesizers, drum machines and acoustic guitars to the forefront. “All Of Our Yesterdays” suggests that Here Comes The Cowboy will find DeMarco moving back into his guitar-forward sweet spot, with an electric/acoustic blend creating a deceptive degree of depth and texture. “Holdin’ on / An image of a memory, another song / All of our yesterdays have gone now,” sings a disarmingly earnest DeMarco, who’s focused on making a better present for a friend in need: “Call me up / When you need a shoulder to prop you up.”

DeMarco and company have added a few stray dates to their upcoming North American and European tour, announced alongside his album in early March. You’ll find their updated tour slate towards the bottom of this page.

Listen to “All Of Our Yesterdays” via the visualizer below (don’t worry—this one’s completely lizard man-free) and revisit a 2013 DeMarco performance from the Paste archives after that.
