Daily Dose: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, “Social Candy”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

It’s no surprise that Australian psych-rock stalwarts Psychedelic Porn Crumpets hail from the same scene that produced modern psych-rock royalty Tame Impala and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.

While it may be easy to write off this Perth four-piece solely based on their kooky band name, your jaw will immediately drop once the guitars of their new single “Social Candy” kick in. Reminiscent of Post Animal’s grand, up-in-the-clouds psych-pop, the track opens with one of the funniest opening lines you’ll hear this year: “What a colossal navigational problem / I seem to be a vegetable.” Frontman Jack McEwan’s vocals are polished and harmonious, while the band’s evocative guitars and high-concept lyrics bring their sound into another dimension, depicting an engrossing, intergalactic psych-rock saga.

McEwan offers his humorous, somewhat nonsensical take on the track:

Lyrically inspired by being absolutely smeagaled, musically reminiscent of the times where you’re battling between McDonalds or forking out for an Indian. A mix of up and down, left or right, Star Wars or that rom-com your girlfriend promised you’d love. Decision upon bad decision. Nights out or The Knight’s Inn. Whatever you pick really doesn’t matter ‘cause you exist at the same time as every other weird Ghandi who thinks time and space is their own substance.

Having previously toured with Royal Blood and Nothing But Thieves back in their home country, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have their sights set on new frontiers as they gear up for their debut U.K. and European headlining tour next month.
