We knew as of last Friday that Sufjan Stevens would perform “Mystery of Love,” his Oscar-nominated contribution to the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack, at this Sunday’s 90th Academy Awards. But it turns out Stevens won’t do it alone—far from it. In fact, he’ll be joined by a murderer’s row of musical talent comprising St. Vincent, Chris Thile, Moses Sumney, Casey Foubert and James McAlister.
“Mystery of Love” is one of three songs Stevens added to the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack, along with “Visions of Gideon” and a rework of his Age of Adz track “Futile Devices.” “Mystery of Love” is nominated for Best Original Song at this Sunday’s awards, Stevens’ first Oscar nod.
St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) and Stevens actually have a history: Clark played in Stevens’ touring band back in 2006, when he was touring in support of his superlative Illinois (which we recently named the best indie-folk album of all time). Clark recently released her acclaimed fifth album as St. Vincent, MASSEDUCTION.
Thile is a Grammy-winning mandolinist, singer-songwriter and composer who has performed as a member of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, and who hosts Minnesota Public Radio show Live From Here. Sumney, whom we’ve declared both the Best of What’s Next and one of last year’s best new artists, recently released his acclaimed debut album, Aromanticism. The singer opened for Stevens on his 2015 Carrie & Lowell Live tour.
Multi-instrumentalist Foubert is a long-time collaborator of Stevens who toured with him as recently as 2015, and has performed as a member of The Shins and Lucius. McAlister collaborated with Stevens on 2017’s Planetarium in addition to playing in his band on his 2015 Carrie & Lowell Live tour.
The 90th Academy Awards air this Sunday, March 4, starting at 8 p.m. EST on ABC. Find Paste’s detailed preview of the awards right here.
