The White Stripes – Under Blackpool Lights

Even the promo copies went out on old-fashioned VHS! Dick Carruthers (famous director behind performance DVDs of Zeppelin and Who concerts) catches The White Stripes’ searing set before the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, England. The Stripes’ blueshouse revue might be worthy of documentation, but the band’s solo-laden medleys and zealously interpreted covers (namely Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”) would be just as well served with a live album, sparing us the 77 minutes of too-tight harlequin pants and grainy close-ups of Jack’s guitar tuning.
