Watch Tom Petty Play Songs From Wildflowers, Released on This Day in 1994

This month, another posthumous release from Tom Petty will arrive. In the year following Petty’s death in October 2017 at age 66, a string of materials have rolled out in memoriam of the late and great rockstar, including a box set, a previously unreleased track called “Gainesville” and its coinciding music video. This time, it’s a big one: The Best of Everything, a career-spanning greatest hits collection encompassing everything from Tom Petty’s solo work to his time with the Heartbreakers and Mudcrutch, will drop this month with the vinyl edition to follow in December.

Several of The Best of Everything’s 38 songs, including “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” are plucked from Petty’s beloved solo album Wildflowers, which was released on this day in 1994. To commemorate Wildflowers’ 24th anniversary, we’re highlighting Paste vault recordings of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performing some songs from the record that same year, which you can check out below. On Oct. 2, 1994, roughly a month before Wildflowers’ release, Petty treated a crowd at California’s Shoreline Ampitheatre to a mix of classics and new songs, some of which hadn’t been released yet. After opening with a cover of J.J. Cale’s 1979 track “Thirteen Days,” Petty jumps right into “I Won’t Back Down.” From Wildflowers, Petty and the band play “You Don’t Know How It Feels” and “Time To Move On.” Ever the crowd pleasers, they performed classics like “Free Fallin’” and “Runnin’ Down A Dream,” too. This 1994 show was also one of the last times drummer Stan Lynch played with the band. He’d later be replaced by Dave Grohl for a short time, followed by Steve Ferrone.

Watch Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers play “Time To Move On” from Wildflowers in 1994 below. Keep scrolling to listen to the rest of the concert via the Paste vault.
