Tune-Yards Start All Over Again on Casually Apocalyptic New Single “ABC 123”

Oakland-based art-poppers Tune-Yards are starting 2018 strong: The band has a new album on the way in January, a new lineup—they’re now operating as a duo—and a busy spring touring schedule. Ahead of I can feel you creep into my private life, due out on Jan. 19, 2018 on 4AD, Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner have shared a new single, “ABC 123,” with a video to match.

The song, penned by bandleader Garbus, is lyrically bleak beyond belief, but instrumentally a blast. “California’s burning down / Sitting in the middle of the sixth extinction,” sings Garbus, shortly before the band establishes a groove that would make even a corpse’s toe tap. Garbus spends most of the video as a disembodied head, walking us through her brand-new version of the ABCs. The clip, directed by Dear Mr Quistgaard, uses quick cuts to emphasize the song’s energy while evoking the disorienting and chaotic conditions to which it alludes.

I can feel you creep into my private life, Tune-Yards’ fourth studio album, is the first to count Garbus’ long-time collaborator Brenner as a full member of the band. The pair wrote and produced the album together—per a press release, Garbus focused its lyrics on “exploring her place in the world, and ruminating on race, politics, intersectional feminism and environmental prophecies.” I can feel you creep into my private life is the follow-up to 2014’s Nikki Nack, while “ABC 123” is the follow-up to the album’s lead single “Look At Your Hands,” which Paste’s Matthew Oshinsky described as “a blast of robotic ‘80s beats, gleaming synths and Garbus’ trademark sing-song alto.” Consider us excited for the rest of the record.

Tune-Yards will tour the U.S. throughout next February and March, with accompaniment from percussionist Hamir Atwal. You’ll find their 2018 tour dates listed below.
