White Reaper Announce New Album You Deserve Love, Share “1F”

After signing to Elektra Records and sharing a pair of new singles over the summer, Louisville, Ky., rockers White Reaper have made it official and announced their new album, You Deserve Love, out on Elektra Oct. 18. The follow-up to the band’s 2017 breakthrough The World’s Best American Band (one of Paste’s top albums of that year) is preceded by its latest single, love/road song hybrid “1F.”

“1F” finds the band preserving their garage-rock edge while introducing more pop-oriented elements: Tony Esposito’s vocals still spike and crackle like a live wire over big, brash guitars, but it’s the insistent, simplistic organ lick, old-school backing harmonies and tidy production that sound like something new. Esposito sings about the time-tested, archetypically American tale of love blossoming on the open road: “She likes to drive around with me / We love each other’s company / And all I have to do is make sure no one ever scratches her car.” Meanwhile, in the track’s Mason Mercer-directed video, White Reaper perform in a garage, sometimes bathed in green, yellow and red lights (or stomping on the corresponding-colored fruits), howling out their song in a classic convertible and eventually driving off into the sunset.

White Reaper’s new song is the third single from You Deserve Love, following May’s “Might Be Right” and July’s “Real Long Time,” which had the appearance of one-offs at the time, but are now revealed to be the LP’s lead singles. The band recorded their Elektra debut in Nashville with producer Jay Joyce, assembling what a press release describes as “a collection of smart, sharply-written songs of doubt, dislocation, and elusive and often complicated love.”

Esposito explains the album’s title in a statement, recalling that “[bassist Sam Wilkerson] had written things down he thought might be good album titles, and we were all sitting around at a bar in Nashville after we had just finished recording, vexing about what we were going to call the album.” Wilkerson continues, “I started reading them aloud at the bar, and everyone stopped me at You Deserve Love … I think it’s cool, because it’s true for everybody. I think it’s what everybody needs to hear.”

White Reaper are spreading the love on an upcoming North American headlining tour in support of their new record, kicking things off in St. Louis on Oct. 3. The Nude Party and The Dirty Nil will provide support on separate legs, with special guests The Paranoyds, Criminal Hygiene, Wombo, Being Dead and Charles Irwin joining in on select stops.
