English indie-psych rockers Whyte Horses have released their latest single, a cover of “Tocyn” by the Welsh prog-rock band Brân. The song will be on the group’s forthcoming release, Hard Times, out Jan. 17, 2020, on CRC Records, and features guest vocals from Super Furry Animals singer Gruff Rhys.
The single features a crunchy guitar line over an upbeat glam beat—transporting listeners directly back to the golden years of rock in the ‘70s. Rhys’ vocal contributions are sung entirely in his mother tongue of Welsh, with his laid-back pronunciations making for an intriguing listen. The song churns along at a steady pace into a ripping guitar solo to bring it to its final chorus.
Thomas explains how Rhys introduced him to the underground Welsh band and, in effect, inspired the energetic cover of “Tocyn”:
“Tocyn” is one of those songs that rides the line between the sublime and ridiculous but its direct glam energy makes it instantly unforgettable. Gruff turned me onto a wealth of folk and psych music from the mid-1970s, mainly housed on the Cardiff-based label, Sain. As well as this hotbed of music there was corresponding Fillmore style sleeve and poster art, strange imagery relayed to the Welsh National Army which all seemed to borrow from America and England.
Hard Times is composed entirely of covers, such as renditions of Lou Reed’s “Satellite of Love” and The Bee Gees’ “Mister Natural.” The album will be out Jan. 17, 2020, on CRC Records and can be preordered here. You can listen to “Tocyn” below and find album details further down.
