Watch Bernie Sanders Play “Rabbi Manny Shevitz” in a 1999 Film

In 1999, a filmmaker named Martin Guigui wrote and directed a movie called My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception. It starred Debbie Gibson, Dom DeLuise, and Mo Gaffney, and IMDB estimates the budget at a low $500,000. This film did not light up the box office. Under most circumstances, it would have been permanently forgotten shortly after its release, and wouldn’t be even the smallest blip on the radar in 2016.

But these are not ordinary circumstances. As it happens, one Bernard Sanders, aka Bernie, made a cameo appearance as a rabbi named “Manny Shevitz.” (Sick pun.) He delivers a two-minute rambling speech about baseball (to the horror of the bride and groom), very much reminiscent of Larry David playing George Steinbrenner on Seinfeld. “I remember when the Dodgers played the Yankees,” he says. “And you bought a ticket, and that ticket was good for ten years.” What?

This year, that same Bernard Sanders is running for president, and gaining quite a bit of support. The newly relevant clip was posted on YouTube in September, but it’s new to us, and it’s funny enough that we wanted to share. Watch it above, and if you’re craving more Sanders art afterward, check out his spoken-word rendition of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land.”
