Vogue Endorses Hillary Clinton for President of the United States

Vogue has endorsed a presidential candidate for the first time in the history of the publication. On Tuesday, the fashion magazine endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has hosted several high-profile fundraisers for Clinton since she announced her candidacy. Vogue has also profiled Clinton on six separate occasions, including in December of 1998, when she was on the cover.

This endorsement comes because of the incredibly high stakes the magazine feels this election brings with it. “Vogue has no history of political endorsements,” their endorsement says. “Editors-in-chief have made their opinions known from time to time, but the magazine has never spoken in an election with a single voice. Given the profound stakes of this one, and the history that stands to be made, we feel that should change.”

The Trump family has also been featured in Vogue numerous times throughout the publication’s history. Melania Trump covered the February 2005 issue, which was an exclusive on her marriage to the current Republican presidential nominee.

Vogue argues that Clinton, not Trump, is the candidate of hope for America’s future in bitterly divided times. “Two words give us hope: Madam President,” reads the piece. “Women won the vote in 1920. It has taken nearly a century to bring us to the brink of a woman leading our country for the first time. Let’s put this election behind us and become the America we want to be: optimistic, forward-looking, and modern.”
