8 Ridiculous April Fools’ Jokes in Tech This Year

Tech Lists

April Fools’ is the tech industry’s favorite holiday of the year—for good or for worse. Most of us by now have been trained to not take anything published on April 1 too seriously, but that doesn’t stop the biggest tech companies in the world from putting out some of the silliest tech products you’ve ever heard of.

This year there were all sorts of hyper-aware April Fools’ tech products that were blogged about yesterday and here are the 10 best:

1. Microsoft’s MS-DOS Phone

We are still waiting to hear what Microsoft’s next big move will be in the smartphone market, but its new MS-DOS phone will do for now. Who needs an official Instagram app when you’ve got this kind of real nostalgia?

2. Google SmartBox

This feels like one of those concepts that someone at Google probably thought was a great idea at one point. The SmartBox notifies you when you get new mail on your phone, magically moves mail into folders inside of your mailbox, and even blocks spam mail. At this point, the only problem is that 75% of my mail is spam to begin with.

3. Netflix Binge-Watching Warning

This one was just cruel. There you were harmlessly catching up on a couple of episodes of your favorite show and you were presented by one of 13 binge-watching announcements given by a star by one of Netflix’s big shows. You may have gotten Michael Kelly from House of Cards telling you to go to work or Selenis Levya from Orange is the New Black, telling you to do your homework. Just cruel.

4. Twitter Twelve Stick

From the official Twitter blog: “The Stick makes it easier for people to not only get the very best angle on their selfies—but also Tweet them out directly from the Stick itself.” Why wouldn’t a company like Twitter want to cash in on the huge booming success that are selfie sticks?

5. Samsung Galaxy Blade Edge

The new Galaxy S6 Edge is beautiful looking phone, but the curved edges don’t have a lot of practical features that people would actually use. Fortunately, Samsung is aware of that and has finally given the device a proper real-life use case: cutting vegetables. The Blade Edge comes with a finger-detection mechanism and a thing called the S Thermometer because why not?

6. Playstation Flow

With all of the hype around virtual reality headsets, it was only a matter of time before this one happened. Playstation Flow are virtual reality goggles so that you can swim and play video games that involve swimming at the same time! Say hello to doing something really cool in your head while looking like a complete idiot to the rest of the world, which at this point seems like the future of the human race.

7. Uber for Tinder

Uber and Tinder are two apps that seem like a match made in heaven. Both are controversial and have gotten into plenty of trouble, both legally and socially. And now, they are together The second you get a match on Tinder, you can request a ride together in Uber—and before you know it you’ll be doing whatever you wanted to connect on Tinder for in the first place.

8. Google Maps Pac-Man

This is just awesome and fun. Who wouldn’t want to play Pac-Man on your own street? Go play it now while you still can!
