How did one man convince 6,000 Colombians to shed their clothes— and inhibitions? Well, it was for the sake of art.
Last weekend, Colombians turned out en masse for a nude photo art project in Bogota’s Bolivar Plaza. The models posed au naturale in the historic district, right near the city’s famed cathedral, for a series that’ll appear in Bogota’s Museum of Modern Art later this year.
“The body for me represents purity and unity and a positive notion of life,” Tunick explained to Reuters. “So bringing the body into a space of government and tradition just brightens the whole place up for me.”
Spencer Tunick is no stranger to nudity. The American photographer has staged nude photo
shoots in cities across the globe for the last 10 years. In 2007, he convinced 18,000 Mexican
City residents to strip in Zocalo Square. Later that year, he gathered 600 Swiss to pose nude atop a glacier in protest of global warming.
This political outlook is probably why next month Tunick is planning a nude protest at the
Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. If anything, expect photos and probably some small-hand gestures to the “yuge” man at the podium.
