Altered Carbon Returns to Netflix for Version 2.0 in February

When Altered Carbon returns to Netflix, Season 1 star Joel Kinnaman will be nowhere to be seen—set in a future society in which human bodies (colloquially called “sleeves”) are interchangeable, the cyberpunk show’s stars function similarly, and it’s Marvel Cinematic Universe star Anthony Mackie stepping into the skin of protagonist Takeshi Kovacs—or the reverse, really—in Altered Carbon Season 2, the premiere date for which was revealed on Tuesday: Feb. 27.

Altered Carbon’s eight-episode sophomore season’s synopsis reads:

Season 2 of the sophisticated and compelling sci-fi drama finds Takeshi Kovacs (Mackie), the lone surviving soldier of a group of elite interstellar warriors, continuing his centuries-old quest to find his lost love Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry). After decades of planet-hopping and searching the galaxy, Kovacs finds himself recruited back to his home planet of Harlan’s World with the promise of finding Quell. Haunted by his past and responsible for investigating a series of brutal murders, Kovacs is stunned to discover his new mission to solve the crime and his pursuit to find Quell are one and the same. With the help of his loyal A.I. Poe (Chris Conner), Kovacs must now partner with new allies to outwit his enemies and find the truth: Who is Quellcrist Falconer?

Mackie, Goldsberry and Conner appear in Season 2 alongside Lela Loren as Governor Danica Harlan, Simone Missick as expert bounty hunter Trepp, Dina Shihabi as out-of-work A.I. Dig 301 and Torben Liebrecht as special forces leader Colonel Ivan Carrera, with James Saito and Will Yun Lee guest-starring as centuries-old Yakuza boss Tanaseda Hideki and an undisclosed mystery character, respectively. Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 novel of the same name serves as Altered Carbon’s source material, though the two stories differ quite a bit.

Netflix also has Altered Carbon: Resleeved on the way, an anime from Cowboy Bebop’s Dai Sato that will “explore new elements of the story mythology,” the streamer has teased.

Altered Carbon Season 2 streams on Netflix Feb. 27. See the show’s brief date announce teaser below.
