FX Renews Atlanta for a Fourth Season

All quiet on the Southern front: FX has greenlit a fourth season of Donald Glover’s groundbreaking FX series Atlanta ahead of the start of production on Season Three.

The network announced Seasons Three and Four of the Emmy-winning comedy will both move towards production stages in spring 2020, and will be filmed in succession.

It’s no secret that Glover is a hot commodity in tinseltown: Though Season Three was first ordered last summer, production was continually stalled by Glover’s increasingly busy schedule as both an actor and musician (lest we forget Glover took on voicing the lead role in Disney’s massive Lion King remake around the time of Season Two’s end date). Filming Seasons Three and Four back-to-back is likely the network’s way of producing both seasons in an efficient and timely manner, whether they’re released in succession or staggered over the course of the primetime season.

“What more can be said about Atlanta than the critical acclaim and accolades that Donald [Glover], Paul [Simms], Dianne [McGunigle], Stephen [Glover] and Hiro [Murai] have earned for two exceptional seasons of what is clearly one of the best shows on television,” president of FX Entertainment Eric Schrier said at the network’s Television Critics Association conference Tuesday, speaking of the series’ producers. “This group of collaborators and cast have created one of the most original, innovative stories of this generation and we are proud to be their partners.”

The network issued eight-episode orders for both Seasons Three and Four, marking a decent drop from Season Two’s lengthy 11-episode slate—but less is more, no?

A premiere date for either season has yet to be revealed, but check back for any further updates on the forthcoming spring productions.
