Doris Roberts: 1925-2016 – Everybody Loves Raymond Star

TV News

Doris Roberts, best known for her work as Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond, died Sunday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 90.

Roberts began her acting career in the 1950s with bit parts before landing her first film role in 1961’s Something Wild. Over the intervening decades, she appeared in numerous television shows and movies, most notably Angie (as Theresa Falco) and Remington Steele (as Mildred Krebs).

Roberts found lasting fame, though, in the role of Marie Barone, the mother of Ray Romano’s protagonist on Everybody Loves Raymond. Reportedly one of over a hundred actresses considered for the role, she became one of the sitcom’s most consistent highlights, garnering four Emmy Awards out of seven nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (and landing at #3 on our list of the 10 best TV moms).

Roberts is survived by her son, Michael Cannata, Jr., and her three grandchildren.
