Netflix Taps 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s Dan Trachtenberg to Direct Episode of Black Mirror Reboot

Dan Trachtenberg, the director behind the popular J.J. Abrams-produced suspense film 10 Cloverfield Lane, has signed on to helm an episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror reboot.

The news, first reported by Deadline, confirms Netflix’s effort to acquire as much top-tier filmmaking talent as possible for its continuation of the BAFTA-nominated and Emmy and Peabody Award-winning U.K. series of the same name.

Black Mirror, which first premiered on Channel 4 in 2011 and ran for two seasons totaling just seven episodes, is a darkly unsettling collection of speculative fiction stories exploring themes of techno-paranoia. The format is similar to popular series like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits, in that each episode focuses on a different story with an entirely new cast of characters.

Trachtenberg joins Joe Wright and Jakob Verbruggen on the list of the program’s heavy-hitting behind-the-camera talent. Actors Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mackenzie Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Malachi Kirby and Alice Eve have been confirmed as stars of the 12-episode season, originally announced last fall.

The creators and executive producers of the original series, Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, are being kept on to serve in a similar capacity, along with taking on showrunner duties. Brooker has also written the new batch of stories. “It’s all very exciting—a whole new bunch of Black Mirror episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable,” said Brooker. “I just hope none of these new story ideas come true.”
