Forgoing its usual strategy of a total advertising bombardment, Netflix has dropped the trailer for its new series The OA just days before the show’s release. In the trailer, we get our first peek at the creepy tone the series adopts, and the mystery at the show’s core.
Brit Marling plays Prairie Johnson, a woman who returns to her small town after vanishing seven years earlier. Johnson’s disappearance is still a mystery, and after growing up blind, she can now see. The series was created by Marling alongside Zal Batmanglij. The pair are also behind The East, a 2013 thriller that Marling also starred in.
The trailer is light on plot and heavy on imagery, suggesting a fantastical series that blends a mystery with elements of the surreal. The OA hits Netflix this Friday. Until then, check out the show’s eerie teaser above.
