ABC to Present Expansive Documentary on Princess Diana

On Aug. 31, 20 years will have elapsed since Princess Diana’s tragic death. ABC, in partnership with Time Inc.’s People Magazine, will commemorate this by preparing an expansive, two-night, four-hour special on her per THR.

It’s fair to say that Princess Diana, featured on 57 People Magazine covers, was something of a goldmine for celebrity media. Said People’s editor-in-chief Jess Cagle, “Our audience has an insatiable appetite for news about the royal family; in fact, they are just as fascinated today as they were when Lady Diana was first introduced to the world back in 1981.”

Executive produced by Emmy winner Maura Mandt, the documentary special will include both new interviews and archival footage. It will join the ranks of a number of docs produced by Time Inc., including The Making of SI Swimsuit 2017 and Puppy Bowl: Where Are They Now.

“Even 20 years after her untimely death, Princess Diana’s legacy continues to impact our world,” said Robert Mills of ABC. “Our special will honor her memory and all the good that she did in her tragically brief life. Our partners at People are perfect to tell this story as they’ve extensively covered her life throughout the years.”
