Stranger Things Creators Read Season Two Fan Theories, Say Some Are Right

TV News Stranger Things

Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators behind this summer’s biggest TV sensation Stranger Things, sat down with THR to talk about the show’s forthcoming second season. Among the interesting facts disclosed in the interview is something that’s sure to get all of the show’s speculation-junkie fans excited.

Apparently the Duffer brothers love reading fan theories, and some theories have already figured out what happens in season two. Said the brothers Duffer:

Matt: Even if they aren’t the final chapter titles, everything in that teaser [for season two] is major. But they’re ambiguous enough that no one is going to be able to figure it out. Some of the fan theories online are amazing. Most are wrong, but I’ve read a few that are right or very close. Is it Reddit? Some of those people have figured stuff out based off of the chapter titles.

Ross: Some of these theories are elaborate and smart. They’re not crap. I love reading this stuff.

Matt: But we don’t go on Reddit.

Ross: No, people send us the stuff. I know I would never get out if I went in there.

It is interesting that the Duffers enjoy reading these fan theories. Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin decided soon after his first Song of Ice and Fire book came out that he wouldn’t read fan theories because he didn’t want to feel pressured to change events if some fans had already guessed them. Apparently, the Duffers aren’t worried about that.

Of course, a million monkeys typing on a million typewriters will inevitably write season two of Stranger Things, but it’s still interesting to know that there’s someone out there who unknowingly guessed correctly just based on some vague episode titles.

Is “MADMAX” the name of a new psychic girl that joins the gang? Is the Upside Down actually the future, and is Will destined to become the monster? Or maybe the monster is actually the Upside Down version of Eleven? Or maybe Barb will come back in season two as a twisted Upside Down monster? Or maybe Eleven comes back Gandalf the White-style with souped-up powers? Maybe the Upside Down is actually a living thing that’s eating our dimension. There are just so many possibilities.
