The Walking Dead Will Cross Over With Fear the Walking Dead, Somehow

Try to contain your enthusiasm for the following news: The Walking Dead will cross over with its companion series, Fear the Walking Dead. That’s right, fans of the zombie shows may finally get to see the much-anticipated meeting of Rick Grimes and whatever the name of Kim Dickens’ character is. The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman confirmed the crossover at the New York Comic-Con, per Deadline.

Kirkman was coy about the specific details, however, telling a crowd at the TWD panel: “There is one character that is going to go from one show, that I will not name, to another show, that I will not name.” So not only do we not know which characters will cross over or which show it will occur in, we also have little idea of when the actual crossover will take place. “This is a huge event in the world of The Walking Dead,” Kirkman then added.

This wasn’t just an off-the-cuff remark from Kirkman, either, as AMC confirmed this information on Twitter:

This news of a crossover does raise some questions: these two shows are not synced up chronologically, with Fear taking place far before The Walking Dead. What we will see will either be an earlier, pre-TWD version of say, Rick Grimes or Daryl Dixon, or a far-future look at a Fear character. Both options have the potential to go awry, with seeing a Fear character alive years later may take away some suspense for the prequel show, or seeing a fan-favorite TWD character earlier in the zombie apocalypse may seem too much like fan service. And of course, there isn’t just the issue of time, but also that of distance. TWD has taken us to Georgia and other locations on the East Coast, while Fear is a California and Mexico affair.

Whatever the case, we may start to get hints about the crossover soon, with The Walking Dead shambling back to screens for its eighth season (and 100th episode) on Oct. 22, a week after Fear wraps up its third season on Oct. 15.
