Henry Cavill to Star in Netflix’s The Witcher Series Adaptation

Henry Cavill is headed back to television, as he’s been cast in an eight-episode Netflix series based on the bestselling The Witcher fantasy series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, the streamer announced Tuesday.

Cavill will star as Geralt of Rivia, “a solitary monster hunter [who] struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts,” and works with a powerful sorceress and “a young princess with a dangerous secret” to navigate the dangerous Continent.

This is Cavill’s first television role since Showtime’s The Tudors, which ended in 2010. In the meantime, Cavill has been busy as the current iteration of Superman in DC’s beleaguered Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, in addition to appearing in the under-appreciated The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and most recently, Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Netflix’s Daredevil, The Defenders) is set as The Witcher’s showrunner, and executive producer alongside Alik Sakharov (House of Cards, Game of Thrones), who is set to direct four episodes, including the pilot. Alex Garcia Lopez (Netflix’s Luke Cage, Daredevil) and Charlotte Brandstrom (Starz’s Outlander, Counterpart) will each direct two episodes.

No word yet on the status of Cavill’s mustache.
