Showtimes Reveals Twin Peaks Revival Premiere Date, Episode Count

At long last, we have concrete details on Showtime’s revival of David Lynch’s cult drama Twin Peaks, including a premiere date and an episode count. Showtime CEO David Nevins revealed in a presentation at the Television Critics Association conference in Los Angeles today that the show will air its two-hour premiere on Sunday, May 21 at 9 p.m. EST.

Following those first two hours, Showtime will give subscribers exclusive access to the next two hours exclusively through their streaming platforms, Showtime Anytime and Showtime On Demand, before airing those third and fourth hours back-to-back at the show’s regular 9 p.m. time slot. From there on, the show will air in one-hour installments until reaching a season total of 18. (It can never be simple where David Lynch is concerned.)

The revival’s official plot synopsis is as follows:

Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential broadcast series of all time, Twin Peaks followed the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town who were stunned after their homecoming queen Laura Palmer was shockingly murdered. The town’s sheriff welcomed the help of FBI agent Dale Cooper, who came to town to investigate the case. As Cooper conducted his search for Laura’s killer, the town’s secrets were gradually exposed. The mystery that ensued set off an eerie chain of events that plunged the inhabitants of Twin Peaks into a darker examination of their very existence. 25 years later, the story continues …

Don’t expect it to continue past this new third season, though. Per Collider, Nevins also told press that the Twin Peaks revival is “designed to be a closed-ended, one-time event.”
