Kristen Bell Confirms Veronica Mars Limited Series Revival at Hulu

The Veronica Mars revival is officially happening. Hulu has ordered an eight-episode limited series revival of the cult-hit mystery comedy, news of which star Kristen Bell confirmed on Twitter Thursday.

Hulu picked up the new series as part of its Hulu Originals slate for 2019, and also announced that it had picked up streaming rights for the show’s entire original run, as well as the crowd-funded 2014 feature film revival. Fans can start streaming past Veronica Mars episodes starting next summer, with new episodes coming on an as-yet-unannounced date next year.

The original series, created by iZombie’s Rob Thomas, had a short-lived but beloved three-season run from 2004 to 2007, and was a breakthrough role for Bell, who played the titular teen private investigator. The show ranked among Paste’s best high school shows of all time, and also appeared on our list of the funniest TV dramas.

Thomas wrote the first episode of the revival, and will also executive produce alongside star Bell, Diane Ruggiero-Wright and Dan Etheridge. Spondoolie Productions will produce the series in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Hulu shared a logline for the revival series along with a release announcing the show’s return:

Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.

Loyal Veronica Mars fans have long been waiting for this revival, which Bell teased as a possibility back in 2016, when she said it might happen if she could align her schedule with that of creator and now-fellow executive producer Thomas.

It seems that all of that is now settled, though, with Thomas’ iZombie wrapping up soon on The CW, and with Bell managing to find time between an ongoing starring role on The Good Place and providing her voice as Anna in next year’s highly anticipated Frozen 2.

Fans don’t yet have a set release date for the Veronica Mars revival, but at least they now have confirmation that it’s finally happening.
