Hear Josh Ritter Play Songs From Sermon on the Rocks On This Day in 2015

Earlier this year, country-leaning Americana singer/songwriter Josh Ritter released his 10th—yes, 10th— studio album. The Idaho-born musician is prolific, but his output always maintains quality. The 2019 album, the Jason Isbell-produced Fever Breaks, is a work of heartbreak and hope, both a ruthless check on the current state of America and an honest collection of personal narratives.

Ritter has been releasing music since the late ’90s, and Paste has been along for most of the ride. We named him one of the 100 best living songwriters in 2006. In 2015, Ritter released Sermon on the Rocks, which contains his upbeat streaming hit “Getting Ready to Get Down.” It also features some more serious fare. Ritter played four of those songs at a Daytrotter session on this day (Nov. 27) in 2015, including “Cumberland,” “Henrietta, Indiana,” and “My Man on a Horse (Is Here).” He also performed a cover of “The Last Word In Lonesome Is Me,” a country song written by Roger Miller that’s been performed by artists like Dolly Parton and Eddy Arnold over the years.
