Exclusive Dark Horse Preview: Brian Wood & Mack Chater Challenge the Government in Briggs Land #1

Comics News Brian Wood

Comic scribe Brian Wood has long charted the tension between government bodies and the men and women they serve. Over the course of his library, few writers have voiced the myriad complexities and personalities that fuel the civil—and uncivil—disobedience that shapes nations. Aside from more modern-set entries like the dystopian punk odyssey Channel Zero and urban civil war of DMZ, Wood has also taken a deep, researched dive into the past to diagram political uprisings in the centuries-spanning Northlanders, its spiritual successor Black Road and, most appropriately, Rebels.

New series, Briggs Land, illustrated by Mack Chater with colors by Lee Loughridge, takes Wood’s obsession to the antigovernment secessionist movement, fresh off the headline-grabbing events at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The plot revolves around Grace Briggs, a woman who assumes control over her husband’s anti-government group and immediately escalates the war against Uncle Sam. While media tends to tackle rural secessionism with equal parts comedy and condescension, Wood’s new comic looks to articulate the issue with intelligence and impartiality.

Even though the first issue isn’t slated to hit until August 17, AMC has already secured a development deal to turn the comic into a winding TV crime epic. Here’s an exclusive first look at Briggs Land #1 and the cover of issue #2 from one of our favorite artists, Tula Lotay.

Dark Horse Solicitation Copy:

Briggs Land, nearly a hundred square miles of rural wilderness, contains the largest antigovernment secessionist movement in the United States. When matriarch Grace Briggs wrests control of the operation from her incarcerated husband, she sparks a war within the community—and her immediate family—that threatens to bring the full power of the federal government down on their heads.
