E3: Nintendo Announces New Metroid and Pokémon Games, Details Super Mario Odyssey and More
Nintendo’s E3 presentation this morning revealed that many new games will be arriving to the Switch and 3DS in the near future. Take a look at all of the games from Nintendo’s conference below as well as some trailers.
Super Mario Odyssey
This might be the biggest game coming to the Switch this year. It is a return to the classic 3D Mario form, similar to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. It was also unveiled that Mario can now possess certain enemies and objects and inherit their powers. Super Mario Odyssey will come to the Switch on Oct. 27.
Metroid: Samus Returns
The 3DS remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus showcases the core 2D action of the Metroid series with updated visuals and mechanics. Metroid: Samus Returns will be available on the 3DS on Sept. 15.
Metroid Prime 4
Metroid Prime 3 was released on the Wii all the way back in 2007, and Nintendo has finally announced the game’s follow-up. We have no idea what to expect yet, though, as nothing was shown besides a logo. Metroid Prime 4 is currently in development for the Switch.
Sonic Forces
The forthcoming Sonic title is being developed by the same team that developed Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. Players will switch between controlling modern Sonic, classic Sonic and their own customizable avatar. Sonic Forces is set to release for the Switch around this holiday season.
Pokémon Switch
While no title, footage or release date was revealed, a new core Pokémon title is now in development for the Switch. This will be a first for the series, as a main Pokémon title has never been released on a console before.
Rocket League
Rocket League is finally coming to the Switch. Players can customize their vehicles with Mario and Luigi hats in the Switch version of the game. No specific release date has been divulged, but it will arrive this holiday season.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles, an adventure-RPG for the Wii, garnered plenty of attention when it was released in America in 2012. Now, the latest follow-up to that game (following 2015’s excellent Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U) will be coming to the Switch. Players will follow the story of Rex and Pyra as they search for Pyra’s long-lost home, Elysium. It will be available this holiday season.
Kirby for Nintendo Switch
A new Kirby platformer has been announced for the Switch and features multiplayer components for up to three additional players. The game will release sometime in 2018.
Yoshi for Nintendo Switch
A Yoshi platformer in the style of Yoshi’s Woolly World is coming to the Switch. Players will be available to interact with objects in the background and foreground, depending on their location. Players can collect coins and defeat enemies from a new perspective. The game is set to release sometime in 2018.
Fire Emblem Warriors
A new Fire Emblem title in the style of Dynasty Warriors will allow players to play as a variety of characters from the series, such as Marth, Corrin and Xander. Nintendo released a similar game for the Wii U, Hyrule Warriors, featuring characters from the Zelda series. The game will release this fall.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Expansion Pass
DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will arrive in two waves. The first DLC pack, titled “Master Trials” will release on June 30. This pack includes Trial of the Sword, Master Mode, Hero’s Path, Travel Medallion, the Korok Mask and eight new armors. The second DLC pack, called “The Champion’s Ballad,” will release this holiday season. Players can purchase the Expansion Pass, which will grant access to the aforementioned DLC packs as well as three new treasure chests.
