Chill Out to this Exclusive Preview of a Final Fantasy and Squaresoft Tribute Album

Music has long been a major part of Final Fantasy’s appeal, with some of its most iconic themes stretching all the way back to the very first installment on the NES. That’s true of Square’s other ‘90s RPGs, as well. Mustin, the producer and remixer from OneUp Studios and the OneUps, pays tribute to that music on The World Is Square, a new album full of serene electronic versions of some of Square’s most memorable music. It’s a relaxing selection of classic JRPG tunes from the ‘90s, recrafted as the kind of chill atmospheric music perfect for a coffee house on a Sunday morning. It’s also timely: it focuses on the more romantic side of Square’s old JRPGs, and thus will be released on Valentine’s Day. You’ll be able to find the whole album this Thursday, Feb. 14, on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify.

Here’s a sneak preview of what you can expect from The World Is Square. Mustin presents a touching and wistful rendition of “Theme of Love” from Final Fantasy IV, with the warmth of his instrumentation nicely tempering the chilled out vibe of his production. It’ll be a good one to listen to on Valentine’s Day, when the full album is released.

The World Is Square will be released by Scarlet Moon Records on Feb. 14 on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify. A physical edition will also be available. The full track listing is as follows:

1. Fear of the Heavens (Secret of Mana)
2. Main Theme of Final Fantasy V
3. “Theme of Love” (Final Fantasy IV)
4. “Forest Butterflies” (“Secret of the Forest”) (Chrono Trigger)
5. “From the Bottom” (“Bottom of the Night”) (Chrono Trigger)
6. “Coin Song” (Final Fantasy VI)
7. “Lonely Girl” (“Terra”) (Final Fantasy VI)
8. “Serenity” (Main Theme of Final Fantasy VII)
