MLG to Head Blizzard’s Overwatch E-Sports League

Major League Gaming is making its return under Blizzard. The e-sports leader will operate Blizzard’s Overwatch League and Activision’s Call of Duty World League as an independent division from Blizzard’s other e-sports teams.

This long-awaited move comes after Blizzard’s acquisition of MLG in January 2016, which at the time, was to further ”[Blizzard’s] plans to create the ESPN of esports,” said Activision/Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.

Blizzard announced that MLG will maintain their name under the new division, leading the charge on management, operation, sales and distribution for the Overwatch League and World Cup. MLG will also handle the MLG network, broadcasting both Blizzard and Activision e-sports content.

At this time, Blizzard will maintain separate teams for its Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, StarCraft and World of Warcraft leagues, but will use the new division’s talents for media production, sales and distribution.
