Pokémon GO Master Sponsored by Marriott to Travel the World, Add to His Collection

Becoming a Pokémon master has its benefits. Just ask Nick Johnson, the Brooklyn tech worker and ultra-avid Pokémon GO player who recently revealed on Reddit that he had caught all 142 Pokémon available in North America. Thanks to Marriott Rewards, Johnson will now have the chance to travel to Europe, Japan and Australia to catch a handful of rare, region-specific Pokémon and add to his already-exceptional collection. A Marriott spokesperson confirmed the company’s offer, per USA Today.

The Pokémon who have thus far eluded Johnson include Mr. Mime, Farfetch’d and Kangaskhan—these rare pocket monsters are reportedly available only in Europe, Asia and Australasia, respectively. Thanks to Marriott’s backing, Johnson will now be able to bring his prodigious Pokédex to 145, which leaves only Ditto, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo and Mew of the original 151. It remains to be seen how or when these legendary Pokémon will factor into Pokémon GO, though they have been detected in the game’s code, but at this point, it seems like only a matter of time before Johnson lands them.

Johnson has worked incredibly hard to reach this point. According to screenshotted data from his iPhone Health app that he shared with USA Today, Johnson has walked an average of eight miles per day since Pokémon GO’s July 6 U.S. release. “I feel great,” he said. “I was getting a lot of rest and exercise and meeting new people. I’m a lot healthier—I think I lost about 8-10 pounds.”

And Johnson has not hesitated to share the wisdom he’s gained along the way. First and foremost, he recommends staying in touch with other trainers to suss out valuable intel on Pokémon locations: “I probably wouldn’t be here, having caught them all, if I hadn’t got those great tips like the Dratinis in Jersey City,” Johnson said. He also cautions would-be egg hatchers to walk in a straight line, since Pokémon GO’s distance displacement calculation means walking in circles won’t help you. “I learned that the hard way,” he said. Last, Johnson suggests investing in a comfortable pair of walking shoes.
