This Eco-Friendly Shower Re-uses the Same Water for Up to Two Weeks

A Tokyo-based startup is in the early stages of designing a shower that can recycle the same water for up to two weeks.

The more eco-friendly showering alternative is so new it doesn’t have a price tag yet, but ideally, it allows a family of three to each take a five-minute shower for up to two weeks using only 5 gallons of water. Talk about water conservation.

The Hotaru shower made an appearance at this year’s SXSW festival where attendees were able to see how adaptable the tech is. The shower, which collapses into the base for each breakdown, contains onboard water reservoirs and a built in water purifier that keeps your shower water clean. And when it’s time to replace that recycled water, sensors notify to make sure you stay safe and hygienic.

It’s easy to see why someone might find this handy when they go camping, but it’s also a great solution for places where there is little indoor plumbing and a very limited clean water supply.
