Watch Michael Fassbender Travel Back in Time in New Trailer for Assassin’s Creed

Michael Fassbender is no stranger to action films, but Assassin’s Creed may be a whole different ballgame. As the film’s latest trailer suggests, it will be filled to the brim with fights, weaponry and building hopping.

Based on the successful Ubisoft game series, Assassin’s Creed follows Fassbenders’ Callum Lynch, a man who travels back to 15th-century Spain through a machine called the Animus, which unlocks his genetic memories. Once there, Lynch experiences the memories of his ancestor Aguilar, and discovers that he is descended from a secret society known as the Assassins. Lynch must bring the skills he learns in the 15th century back to the present day to battle the Templar organization.

Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Michael Kenneth Williams star alongside Fassbender. Directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), Assassin’s Creed aims to be successful where so many other videogame adaptations have not. It certainly has the right cast to establish a model for successful game adaptations, but only time will tell if it’s able to follow through.

Assassin’s Creed is due out on Dec. 21. Check out the new trailer above to watch Fassbender leap from lots of very tall buildings, and watch the first trailer, which debuted in May, below.
