New Jackie Trailer Promises an Astounding Natalie Portman Performance

Natalie Portman’s already won an Oscar, but maybe one isn’t enough. Whether she likes it or not, her performance in Jackie has put her in the Oscar conversation, and the film’s official trailer gives us a far clearer sense of why that might be.

“I’m not the First Lady anymore,” Portman says, embodying Jackie Kennedy in the days after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The trailer gives us a sense of the mayhem surrounding her final days in the White House, and the feelings of shock and grief she experienced after losing her husband.

Directed by Pablo Larraín, Jackie also examines Jackie Kennedy’s role in crafting a legacy for her late husband, even amidst intense public and private scrutiny. The film also stars Peter Sarsgaard as Robert Kennedy, Greta Gerwig as Nancy Tuckerman, the Kennedy administration’s social secretary, and John Hurt as a clergyman in whom Jackie confides throughout the film.

Portman and Larraín are both considered heavy favorites heading into Oscar season, and the trailer suggests that the movie will feel relevant in spite of its period setting. “I’ve grown accustomed to a great divide between what people believe and what I know to be real,” Portman says in the trailer, uttering a sentiment most would probably agree with today.
