Blonds

Music Features

If Blonds’ recently released, super NSFW video was any indication, the band isn’t shy about putting their relationship in the public eye. The duo, which is Cari Rae and Jordy Asher, released the EP Dark Roots last December, and they caught up with Paste to talk about the perks and challenges of being a couple in a band.

Paste: How long have you been dating?:
Rae and Asher: We’ve been dating for about 2 and a half lifetimes.

Paste: Tell us the story of how you first met.
Rae and Asher: Cari was working in a horse stable and Jordy delivered the oats.

Paste: What’s the best part about being in the same group as your partner?
Rae and Asher: Everything. Recording in our underwear.

Paste: What’s the most challenging part about being in the same group as your partner?
Rae and Asher: Not all of our business stays private.

Paste: Describe your first date.
Rae and Asher: Our first date lasted for about 36 hours, without sleeping, and also involved driving across half of the state of Florida and back. It was pretty obvious by the fourth or fifth hour that we were meant to be together.

Paste: What was it like when you started making music together?
Rae and Asher: “Natural” seems to be the best word to describe it. It wasn’t something we originally planned on doing, but we just did it on a whim and got addicted.

Paste: Is there a song that means something special to you as a couple?
Rae and Asher: We’ve had a lot of “secret songs” for each other throughout our history that we keep to ourselves. One that is fairly close to home with us is “Moon River” performed by Audrey Hepburn. The lyrics just about sums us up.
