In a 2015 interview with Pitchfork, The Weeknd spoke about his bond with Lana Del Rey, stating, “I feel like we’ve always been talking to each other through our music. She is the girl in my music, and I am the guy in her music.”
The pair have collaborated a number of times on Weeknd tracks, like “Prisoner,” and last year’s “Stargirl Interlude,” but on Wednesday, with the release of the new single “Lust for Life,” we finally have a taste of what the the R&B superstar can bring to one of Del Rey’s songs.
“Lust for Life” is the second single and title track from Del Rey’s forthcoming record, following “Love,” which was released back in February. A proper duet, the song finds Lana and The Weeknd’s airy vocals twirling around each other as they stress the beauty in taking control of your life. “We’re the masters of our fate/We’re the captains of our own souls,” they each sing, their voices filled with a blend of sensuality and longing. Musically, the reverb-soaked synth waves that fill the track set things in the sort of blissful, dreamy space that Del Rey has long been comfortable with.
The song is available now, and you can check it out with the visualizer above, with Del Rey and Weeknd canoodling atop the ‘H’ on the “Hollywood” sign.
