This Week In News

Music Features

There was plenty of news this week to whet the appetite of pop-culture aficionados, including our handy—especially if that’s where you found yourself going—guide to TV shows set at school.

NPR’s First Listen Series gave fans an advanced listen of The Avett Brothers’ new album. Sleigh Bells released a video for “End of the Line” from their recent album, Reign of Terror. Flight of the Conchords reunited for Red Nose Day and wrote a song for charity. Florence + the Machine are taking a year off for a tune-up. And if that wasn’t enough music news, Tom Waits and The Decemberists are set to appear on The Simpsons this season, and SNL has enlisted Mumford & Sons and Frank Ocean as musical guests on upcoming episodes.

In movie news, director Terrence Malick cut Rachel Weisz and other big-name stars from his film To the Wonder. Michael Keaton joined the RoboCob reboot. The internet’s favorite feminist Ryan Gosling is set to make his directorial debut with How to Catch a Monster starring Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks. Plenty of trailers were released this week as well, including Django Unchained (with new footage!), HBO’s Hitchcock biopic The Girl, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master.

And on the boob tube, we haven’t said goodbye these after all as Judy Greer will reprise her role on Arrested Development. Fox allowed viewers to get a first-look at Mindy Kaling’s upcoming show The Mindy Project. In addition to Joss Whedon confirming that a sequel to Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is in the works, he has also been tapped to write the pilot for Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. for ABC. Eddie Murphy is shopping a Beverly Hills Cop TV series to the networks, and the season three trailer for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire was released.
