What to Do in Los Cabos: Three Ways to Enjoy Yourself

Like many early experiences with tequila, Los Cabos might bring to mind clubs and bad mixed drinks. But with the help of a few luxury resorts, you can easily find a place tailored to relaxation, privacy, and impressive Mexican cultural excursions. From mezcal and agave tastings to master culinary classes and excursions to discover local wonders, the very end of the Baja California Sur peninsula is a haven of elevated experiences.

Wellness

Time simply slows down in Puerto Los Cabos, a resort community just east of San José del Cabo. There are only a few hotels within the community and the JW Marriott is the perfect place for a wellness escape. There are multiple pools-including an adults-only option with a hot tub overlooking the Sea of Cortez, and a wonderful spa with skillful therapists.

Fit in a morning workout in the infinity lap pool inside the Jasha Spa, then relax and recover in the adjacent pool with different jets for soothing tired muscles. Take a dip in the hot and cold plunge pools inside the gendered spa centers, then hit the saunas. Dry off before being met by your massage therapist who will work away all your stress and harbored tension.

For a particularly interesting and different wellness stay and spa visit, contact the spa early to book a Temazcal Ceremony. The traditional Mexican ceremony is led by a shaman and is essentially a rebirthing experience. Participants are summoned by a conch shell-horn and cleansed with sage smoke before entering the womb-shaped sweat lodge. The entire journey is an hour and a half and is an emotionally soothing way to set an intention and focus on it.

Immerse yourself in the local culture while enjoying a relaxing, stress-free beach vacation. For a completely seamless stay, book a suite in the Griffin Club, which includes private check-in. There’s also a long list of all-inclusive food and drink options so you’ll never have to sign a check charged to the room should you not want to.

Art and Architecture

The architecturally-impressive, one-year-old Solaz resort is the ideal retreat for those who love art. Throughout the hotel from the lobby to the restaurants and even the curated excursions, local and native art is front and center. The location between the two Cabos also allows guests to easily access both cities to visit galleries and shop for local pieces.

Mexico City artist César López Negrete worked in tandem with the award-winning architecture firm Sordo Madaleno with architect Alejandro Coeto at the helm to create an immersive art exhibit and installations throughout the resort. The open lobby is filled with López’s art that steps toward an expansive view over the entire terraced resort filled with endemic plants and the Sea of Cortez. Another beautiful piece is the mural of humans depicted as divided by good and evil in front of the reception desks, which is inspired by local cave paintings.

While the luxurious suites with private plunge pools, hammocks and indoor-outdoor showers are tempting enough to keep you on the property for days at a time, have your artisan, or butler, arrange a signature excursion to the caves themselves. The trip requires a full day, but it is worth the desert trek. There are only a few families that have found and continue to guide trips to some of these remote caves, so it remains a truly local, authentic experience in the arts of Baja California Sur.

A Private Retreat

Zadun, one of four Ritz-Carlton Reserves around the globe, is also located in Puerto Los Cabos. The resort opened in November 2019 and offers a glittering, private retreat with classic Ritz-Carlton service. This luxury property excels in creating intimate experiences and a private atmosphere while maintaining a relaxed and comfortable setting.

Take a dip in your private plunge pool, swing in a hammock on the beach or soak up sun from a poolside cabana complete with an iced cooler of water, sunscreen, fans and fresh fruit popsicles. Swim up to X bar at the adults-only pool and order a cocktail like a sake-peach puree concoction that’s a brilliantly balanced spin on a margarita. Another afternoon option to curb your appetite is a taco demonstration and class at El Barrio.

Book a visit to Spa Alkemia to slip into a day of peace, tranquility and relaxation. While the facility itself is beautiful and filled with stunning pools and saunas, one of the best rooms is the Savasana. With only one other Savasana in the world, the sound room is built with quartz floors to transfer soundwaves throughout your body to fully experience music. Go after a massage to prolong your relaxation.

No matter how you prefer to spend a week of sun, sand and pools in Los Cabos, the experiences at these resorts will not disappoint. From the delicious food and drinks to the incredible pools and spas, each place presents a different side to the region while acting as a base for exploring it. Watch whales breach and manta rays fly across the water from your room, then arrange a trip to get up close to the action. With a little help from the skilled staff, you won’t want to leave Mexico.
