HBO’s Game Of Thrones Writer Bryan Cogman Signs Overall Deal with Amazon

Emmy-winning producer-writer Bryan Cogman has inked an overall deal with Amazon Studios, the streamer announced Friday.
Under the pact, Cogman, best known for his work on HBO’s Game of Thrones, will write exclusively for Amazon and create original television series to be released globally on Amazon Prime Video.
Cogman began his celebrated career on GoT as an assistant to the creators, then moved up the ranks to writer, and eventually became a co-executive producer of the series—a role in which he’s won two Emmys, with GoT taking home Outstanding Drama Series honors in 2015 and 2016. Some of the episodes Cogman has written include “Stormborn,” the second episode of season seven, and “The Broken Man,” the seventh episode of season six, which introduced the fan-favorite character of Lyanna Mormont.
“We’re proud to be in business with Bryan, who has written some of the most memorable and exhilarating television in recent history,” said Albert Cheng, Co-Head of Television at Amazon Studios, in a statement. “His storytelling prowess is undeniable, and we cannot wait to introduce his voice to our Prime Video audience.”
Cogman was also one of the five writers chosen to develop a new show for the Thrones fandom. This past June, HBO ordered a different prequel show to pilot. Set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series from Kick-Ass and Kingsman writer Jane Goldman chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. None of the series’ current main cast are involved in the project.
So what will Cogman’s new overall deal mean for his in-development (last we heard) prequel? Its fate has yet to be determined.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled and honored to start the next phase of my career with Amazon. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to start writing,” said Cogman.
Cogman joins a league of successful producers already at Amazon, including Nicole Kidman, Jordan Peele, Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead), Amy Sherman-Palladino (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Jill Soloway (Transparent).
